What is the earnings season? ›

Earnings season is a period when a substantial percentage of publicly traded companies release their quarterly results.

The most authoritative and complete resource for all earnings reports is the SEC's EDGAR system.

In general, each earnings season begins one or two weeks after the last month of each quarter (December, March, June, and September). Thus, look for the majority of public companies to release their earnings in early to mid-January, April, July, and October.

In finance or discussing the stock market, "after the bell" refers to any news, earnings reports, and other activities occurring or released after the stock market close.

YTD earnings refer to the amount of money an individual has earned from Jan. 1 to the current date. This amount typically appears on an employee's pay stub along with information about Medicare and Social Security withholdings and income tax payments.

Fiscal year-end is the last day of a company's 12-month accounting period, which is used for financial and tax reporting purposes. If a company has a fiscal year-end that is the same as the calendar year-end, it means that the fiscal year ends on Dec. 31.

An earnings announcement is an official public statement of a company's profitability for a specific period, typically a quarter or a year. An earnings announcement occurs on a specific date during earnings season and is preceded by earnings estimates issued by equity analysts.

Option 2: Sell part of every growth stock you own before it reports earnings. Believe it or not, this is a decent halfway measure … if you're running a concentrated portfolio. For instance, if you have, say, 12% of your account in a stock that's about to report, maybe you trim that down to 6% or 8%.

The closing bell shuts the U.S. stock market at 4 p.m. Eastern time each day, but trading continues in other venues after the bell. After-hours trading comes with unique risks, although many investors use these extended hours as a key tool in their strategy.

Many exchanges offer pre-market trading that occurs before the opening bell. During this time, traders and investors who have access to the extended session trading may place trades with one another. But there are no market specialist or market makers during these hours, and trading is done with limit orders only.
