Earnings spotlight: Nvidia

Nvidia (NVDA) will disclose its second-quarter earnings results after Wednesday's close. The release of the chipmaker's quarterly results has become a marquee event on the earnings calendar and for good reason. Indeed, the company's jaw-dropping quarterly results in May 2023 – where the chipmaker forecast quarterly revenue 50% above what Wall Street analysts were calling for at the time – lit a fire under investors' appetites for all things artificial intelligence (AI).

This time around, analysts expect NVDA to report earnings of 57 cents per share. Note that this is considerably lower than its Q1 results due to the 10-for-1 stock split the company enacted in June. The Street's forecast compares to the company's year-ago, post-split earnings of 25 cents per share. Revenue is expected to land at $25.6 billion, nearly double the $13.5 billion it reported in the year-ago period.

While Stifel analyst Ruben Roy (Buy) is aware that there are concerns about near-term production targets for NVDA's Blackwell chips, he sees any potential delays to be in months vs quarters. He also says that recent checks indicate healthy demand.

"Consequently, we are again expecting a beat/raise scenario for July results and October guidance," Roy says. "We are not expecting any meaningful change in tone or messaging relative to what NVDA has focused on since the company reported its fiscal first-quarter results, i.e. the company's longer-term road map and continued investment in organic and collaborative software offerings."

Earnings spotlight: Salesforce

Salesforce (CRM) will represent Dow Jones stocks on the earnings calendar, with the software-as-a-service (SaaS) firm set to report its second-quarter results after Wednesday's close.

Industry analysts expect Salesforce to disclose earnings of $2.36 per share, up 11.5% over the year-ago period. Revenue is forecast to arrive at $9.2 billion, down 3.8% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis.

"CRM has the easiest comparisons of the year," says Jefferies analyst Brent Thill (Buy), though he notes that recent checks suggest soft demand. This has investors fretting over an adjustment to revenue expectations, he adds.

Thill expects management will address these demand concerns, as well as give updates on "artificial intelligence and data cloud, adoption within customer base, and commitment to giving more margin upside."

Earnings spotlight: Ulta Beauty

Ulta Beauty (ULTA) stock popped earlier this month on news Warren Buffett & Co. added it to the Berkshire Hathaway equity portfolio in Q2. Shares of the beauty products retailer are now up 14% since the regulatory filings were released.

Can a well-received earnings report keep the wind at Ulta's back?

Wall Street will find out when Ulta releases its second-quarter results after Thursday's close. Wall Street anticipates earnings of $5.52 per share (-8.3% YoY) on revenue of $2.6 billion (+4% YoY).

With the market already pricing in slowing sales trends and expectations Ulta will lower its full-year forecast, UBS Global Research analyst Michael Lasser (Buy) thinks the focus of the company's Q2 print will be margins.

"This could provide insight into what a realistic margin is for the business with the backdrop unfolding for a slower sales growth environment," Lasser says. "Additionally, this could provide an early look at this key stock input ahead of Ulta's Analyst Day in October."
